The novelty tee was our most democratic department: one garment, one price class, and a print wall that ran from classic black-and-white comedy trios to electric guitars, motorcycles, poker hands and wine-country jokes. A good graphic tee is the cheapest reliable laugh in a wardrobe, and the category has rules worth knowing whether you're gifting one or building a drawer of them.

From Undershirt to Billboard

The t-shirt began as a naval undergarment, went public on returning servicemen in the 1940s, and became a canvas the moment screen printing met rock posters and movie merchandising in the 1960s. Smithsonian Magazine's history of the t-shirt traces how a plain white basic became the most printed-on garment in human history. The novelty tee is that history's comedy section: vintage television comedians mugging across the chest, band-style guitar art, hot rods, casino spreads — wearable allegiances, declared in cotton.

What Makes a Quality Graphic Tee

Fabric: 100% cotton, mid-weight. The classics we carried were full-cut 100% cotton shorts-sleeve shirts around 5.5–6 oz — substantial enough to hold a print flat, breathable enough for July. Featherweight fashion tees curl at the hem and surrender their print in a season.
Print method matters. Traditional screen printing lays ink in opaque, durable layers — the slight texture you can feel is longevity. Cheap heat transfers feel like plastic film and crack along fold lines within months.
Black holds the joke. There's a reason the comedy-print canon lives on black shirts: dark grounds make line art pop and survive years of washing without the dinginess white shirts develop.
Check the collar. Ribbed crew necks with shoulder-to-shoulder taping keep their shape; a wavy collar after one wash marks a corner-cut shirt.

Fit, Sizing and the Unisex Question

Traditional novelty tees are cut full and straight — true to the undershirt ancestry — which is why the same shirt has always served men and women. Size down for a modern fit, size true for the classic relaxed look, and remember that 100% cotton without pre-shrinking gives up roughly half a size in the first hot wash. When gifting, the relaxed cut is the safe bet: a roomy tee becomes sleepwear; a tight one becomes a rag.

The Print Wall, by Theme

Our tee wall organized itself into themes that never stopped selling, and the taxonomy is useful for gift shoppers. Classic comedy — black shirts with vintage television comedians — was the perennial number one, bought overwhelmingly as gifts between brothers. Music prints (guitars, pianos, drum kits) split between players and fans, and the players are pickier: get the instrument right or don't bother. Hobby declarations — poker spreads, bowling pins, fishing lures, motorcycles — work because they hand the wearer a conversation starter. A graphic tee is the easiest gift to buy badly, because the joke has to land twice — once when the box opens and again every time the shirt is worn in public. The safe path is enthusiasm over identity: a print about something the person actively does (plays, rides, cooks, fishes) outperforms a print about who they supposedly are. Buy the relaxed cut when you are unsure of the size, favour black or a deep heather for a print you want to survive years of washing, and keep the receipt information with the gift rather than in the card, where it always gets thrown away with the wrapping.

Keeping the Graphic Bright

Print care is simple and almost nobody does it: wash inside out, cold, and skip the dryer's high heat — heat is what cracks ink. Hang-dry or tumble low, and never iron across a print.
